January 23rd 1:30-4:30pm S320EF
Surprise, engage and motivate your young learners with storytelling and coding! In this session you'll learn about the app Novel Effect, which adds magic to your read alouds with sound effects and music. Participants will have the chance to experience Novel Effect and explore the Novel Effect resource library with TONS of free classroom lessons and ideas. Then participants will learn how to utilize the free app Scratch Jr. to introduce your students to computer science concepts, as they learn to code to retell events from the story or share what they learned. Both Scratch Jr and PBS KIDS Scratch Jr will be introduced, and participants will have the opportunity to explore, play, create and code. We will also explore how to save and share completed coding projects to Seesaw or another digital platform.
📙✏️ The Write Stuff: Supporting Early Literacy with WriteReader 📙✏️
January 26th 9:00-10:00am Leadership Roundtables – Booth 4711, EXPO
Young learners best acquire literacy skills when they are immersed in exploration and application of that knowledge. WriteReader, a research-based program, provides a simple yet powerful platform for emergent readers and writers to practice using their knowledge in engaging, creative ways by writing their own books. In this session, we will introduce the WriteReader platform and provide examples of successful use in grades K-3. Participants will have the opportunity to explore and create during the session. During the session, we plan to introduce WriteReader, providing time for participants to sign up and create their own accounts. We can provide codes that will give participants access to the premium version of this tool for an extended period of time, allowing them the opportunity to utilize all features and tools of this program. Particular attention will be given to the accessibility and supportive tools within WriteReader, such as Key Sounds (providing letter and or/phonics audio for students who need this support), text to speech, and audio support. These tools are especially helpful for emergent writers and early language learners.
