Today we made green eggs and ham in class, then graphed whether or not we liked them. Most of the kids enjoyed them!

One Fish, Two Fish Addition
I found this great activity on the site ObSEUSSed. The kindergartners practiced addition by adding the appropriate number of Goldfish (or Swedish fish) to each fish bowl. After they finished the math, they got to eat the fish. They are becoming so fluent in solving addition problems!

Dr. Seuss Week
Next week we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday by reading stories and doing lots of Seuss-themed projects. Check out the Seussville website for fun projects, activities and games!
On Wednesday the 27th we will be doing a "One Fish, Two Fish" counting activity. If you can send in a package of goldfish crackers, it would be appreciated!
Also, if your kindergartner has a Dr. Seuss book they would like to bring in to share with the class during our Dr. Seuss study, you are welcome to send it in. Please be sure it is marked with your son or daughter's name. Thank you!

We made our very first QR code book last week, and I am super excited about it! The students wrote short stories about hibernation, and then Ms. Cantrell (thank you, Braeden's mom!) came in and helped record the students reading their stories on Audioboo. I linked the recordings to QR codes and added these codes to each student's watercolor painting about hibernation. Now, when students are using the iPads they can scan the QR codes in this book and hear their friends reading stories to them. They are really excited about this, and we are anxious to make more QR code books!
Here is an example of one of our book pages. Click here or the image above to hear Braeden read his hibernation sentences.

Valentine's Day Party
Thank you to the parents who were able to come in to spend time with us today, and to Mrs. Wiegand for bringing treats. The kindergartners really loved looking at all of their Valentine cards, and many of them had a chance to glue their cards into their Valentine Scrapbooks. Thanks to everyone who sent in cards and treats for the kids to enjoy!
We also sorted and graphed our cards. In the kiddos' poem books, there is an "Analyze Graph Data" page that I told them could be "homework" for the break. This should be a fun project to do together; use your kindergartner's graph or scrapbook to sort the cards and answer the questions on the sheet. If they bring their homework back, they will get a prize.
Pictures will be posted soon. Happy Valentine's Day! Enjoy your break!

Valentine "Day" 2/13/13
We will have a small celebration of Valentines Day in our room on our early out day, February 13th. Around 11 or 11:15, students will look at valentine cards, eat treats, and maybe read stories or sing songs (depending on time). Then we will go to recess and get ready for noon dismissal. If anyone is interested in joining us, you are welcome to. Remember to stop in the office and check in for a visitor's badge.
If anyone would like to provide a special treat or drinks, please let me know. Thank you!

Move-a-Thon
Just a reminder that the Beartooth Move-a-Thon will begin February 13th. Information will come home soon. This is a fundraiser for Beartooth PTA, and a way to encourage Beartooth kids (and their families) to get healthy and active! The fundraiser will culminate in a Fun Run on March 2nd. The Beartooth School website has more information and registration forms.
iPad Day
In our room, we now have "iPad Days", in which each kindergartner will have a chance to use the iPad throughout the day for different activities that support what we are learning in class. For example, while the other students are doing Morning Work, if it is their iPad Day, they get to do a "Teach Me Kindergarten" app on the iPad. On your child's iPad Day, he or she may come home with unfinished work from school. If you would like to get extra practice on the concept, please work with your child to complete the work at home. If they return it to school, they get a sticker.
Thanks!
Thanks!

PTA Treasurer Needed!
If anyone is interested in helping your child's education by being involved in the PTA, I encourage you to contact any of our PTA officers. The PTA is currently seeking a treasurer for the 2013-14 school year. The current treasurer is available to help train the new person. The treasurer keeps the checkbook, fills out some minor tax forms and creates the budget. Anyone interested in this position, or just in learning more about PTA should contact our president, Tracy Marsh.
Our PTA is wonderful, but without new people stepping forward we may not have one for much longer. :( Please help if you can!

Valentine's Day
Since we will not be in school on Valentine's Day, we will celebrate in our room on Wednesday, February 13th. This is an early out day. Students are encouraged to bring Valentines for their classmates (there are 19 students in our room). Please have your kindergartner sign his or her name, but do not address them to any particular kids (this makes it much easier to hand them out.) If your child would like to send a Valentine for Mrs. Mehling, I will be sure she gets them.
You can send in Valentines any time between now and the 13th. If we get some earlier and don't have to "deliver" them all at once, it makes things easier!
Also, if you would like to send in a special treat on this day, you are welcome to. Please keep in mind that we have students with nut allergies and a student on a gluten-free diet. Thank you!
