Hero Day 2/24/12
The Student Council has declared tomorrow "Hero Day" at school. If your kindergartner mentions this to you, please let them know that they are welcome to dress as their favorite hero (superhero or other hero such as fireman, policeman, mom, dad, etc). They shouldn't wear a complete costume - no masks, weapons, etc.
We brush our teeth 2 times a day!
The kindergartners did a wonderful job of writing about keeping their teeth healthy. I was so impressed with their writing! We attached them to these pictures they drew of themselves with marshmallow teeth. We have learned so much about good dental hygiene this week.
Measuring with Unifix Cubes
Today we practiced estimating and measuring school supplies with Unifix cubes.

Cars Day!
Our Cars Day is off to a great start! Many kindergartners brought cars from home that we will sort and graph. We are counting by 5s t0 95 (because that's Lightning McQueen's number!) and playing a letter ID game with Cars characters.

Sorting, Graphing and Recording Candy Hearts
Today we sorted, graphed and then recorded the number of candy hearts we each received. The kindergartners did a great job and enjoyed doing this fun project!
Exchanging Valentines
Thank you for the cards and treats. We had a very fun day! Happy Valentine's Day!

Glue sticks
For Valentine's Day we will be making an art project and are in need of glue sticks. If you can send one in with your child by Tuesday, that would be great! Thank you!
Making letters and words
Today in our centers we practiced forming different letters and words using Wicki Sticks. The kids loved this. This can also be done at home using Play-Doh!
More or Fewer
Today we practiced numbers that are more or fewer (greater than or less than) by "feeding" the fish in the ponds. The kindergartners will be bringing home the pieces and Play-Doh to play this at home!
Junior Field Practicum Student
We are lucky to have Brooke Oftedal in our classroom as a junior field practicum student this semester. Mrs. Oftedal has been a big help, and the kids are enjoying getting to know her.

Valentine Sight Words
We have been playing this game to practice our sight words. I hide a little dot behind one of these hearts, and the kids take turns spelling sight words and trying to guess which heart the dot is hidden behind. They love this game, and it would be a fun and easy thing for you to try at home, too. We also play with numbers and simple addition problems.
Will the Groundhog See His Shadow?
We made predictions about whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow, and graphed our predictions. The students had to cut apart sentences (either "Yes, he will." or "No, he will not.") and glue them back together in the correct sequence on their papers.
Valentine's Day
On Valentine's Day (Tues the 14th) we will be exchanging Valentine cards with one another. You are encouraged to send Valentines for every student in our class (there are 23). I am not sending home a "name list" for the Valentines. Please just have your son or daughter write their name in the "from" section and leave the "to" part blank. Thank you! If you send in any candy or treats with the Valentines, please remember to not include anything with nuts or peanut butter. We appreciate your consideration!
Happy Valentine's Day!

Football Friday
On Friday we will celebrate the Superbowl with football-related stories and activities in our classroom and with our 3rd grade buddies. Encourage your child to wear a jersey or shirt featuring his or her favorite football team on Friday!
